Number Stations make electronic future-rock sounds. Formed in Edinburgh in mid-2018, the trio comprises modular synth wizard and noise-mangler Alasdair O'May, guitar hero and beatmeister Cameron Watson and award-winning film composer Scott Mungin. They take their name from the enigmatic broadcasts that haunt shortwave radio.
Their first gig was at legendary Edinburgh venue Sneaky Petes, supporting The Alphabox. Further shows followed including an appearance at Martin Christie's Electronic Music Open Mic night at the Voodoo Rooms which led to appearances on The Home Brew Electronica Show and Letters From Mouse radio shows. 2020 saw Number Stations planning their debut EP and looking forward to a summer of gigs, including an appearance at Manchester's Subliminal Impulse festival. The novel Coronavirus had other plans, however. Surveying the wreckage of the year, the trio resolved to create something substantial amid the uncertainty and hunkered down in their respective studios to record their debut album. Scott, a reluctant singer, found his voice in lockdown as the band's sound reached into new territory.
Nocturnes, the debut album, was released at midwinter. A heady brew of rhymes, rhythms, old pianos, electronic atmospheres and left-field guitars, Nocturnes is the sound of a band finding light in a dark time.
